Which helps build muscle in the body? Lifting weight or heavy diet after workout?

I planning to join a gym soon. Just wanted to know more about body building.
I was wondering how body building helps build muscle? Is it because of the heavy weights or because of the food we eat due to all the workout?

You need to lift heavy to get big. The repetitions don’t really matter, as long as the weight is bloody heavy!
I’m a massive fan of reaching failure for each exercise, anyone who doesn’t reach failure for each exercise isn’t training hard enough or doesn’t have the mental strength to pull it off.
It is true that failure is not necessary, only progression is. But reaching failure is the most accurate way to ensure progression. Progression is simply adding more weight or more reps to each exercise, every single week.
If you do decide to go to failure for each exercise, then only do 1 set for each exercise. Anymore then 1 set is a waste of precious time (unless you want to do a light warm up set).

Anyway the body builds muscle to protect itself. You don’t have to train like a body builder to get big, you could pull cars, climb cliffs, through big rocks, lift bricks, cut down trees, lift logs, split wood, tear books in half etc.
Your body adapts to it’s environment. If you provide an environment where it is facing tough physical challenges that require the use of muscle, then it will respond by giving you more muscle to make these challenges easier.

For example take a look at a marathon runner, the runners body needs to be light, low in muscle mass and skinny.

Then take a look at a professional wood chopper, his body needs to have good balance and incredible upper body strength to swing that massive axe around and cut up the chunk of wood. How many wood choppers do you see that look like a marathon runner? None. Because they would die if their body didn’t adjust to heavy axe swinging environment. Plus the fact that wood choppers would eat like a horse compared to a little scrawny marathon runner.

To build muscle it is true that you need to eat a lot of protein, and preferably every 3 hours. So in that respect it is both heavy weights and the food we eat.

How long does it take to build a 1lb of muscle?

I just started working out, I have kept my caloric intake the same amount as usual but I have shifted it to more protein. I am eating 1g of protein per pound of body weight. I was curious on how long does it take to gain muscle.

I weigh 150 lbs, I am 5′11”

And if I want to build muscle will I have to consume more calories than I am now or will I just need to eat more protein, since protein is the only macro molecule that is used in building muscle through via amino acids as building blocks. So it makes no sense to eat more carbs or fat than I am at the moment to build muscle.

Muscle tissue consumes carbs for power. To make proteins from amino acids requires gobs of ATP, which must be made from carbs.


In order to build muscle how many excess calories should I eat?

I am a 5′1 120-125 pound female. I need to build more muscle for my grappling. Also how many grams of protein do I need a day?

What is a fast way to build muscle on your upper body and abs?

By fast i mean like for example a 20 min. a day 4 times a week routine to build muscle, remember thats just an example but other than that i am open to any suggestions.

What is the best way to build muscle up on my horse?

Does anybody know what are the best ways to build muscle up on the horses quarters, and shoulders? I have been told to walk up hills and not to trot up them and things like that , is this true? What suggestions can you give?

Hill work hill work hill work – this worked for both my horses, my mare i am able to canter down slight hills – keeping her steady which works brilliantly – i am unable to do this with my gelding as he’s not as balanced and would jsut want to gallop down it! But i do alot of walking up steep hills and occasionally trotting – this does help to ppl just say that horses find walking harder than trotting up hills therefore walking will make the muscles work harder! If your horse is balancve and you are ble to canter steadily down hill then this has worked wonders for my TB mare!
Also in the school try lots of circling and pole work and put the two together – cirlcling makes them use thier back end alot – bring them in gradually on a smaller circle then gradually out! Good luck and enjoy!

What would i need and what exercises. I plan on buying a machine such as a bow-flex with my saved up money. heavy weight with low reps actually focuses on strength. If you want size, you want moderate weight with 8-12 reps.

You also need a mass building diet to gain weight. I prefer dumbbells over bowflex. You are better off getting a pair of adjustable dumbbells instead. I recommend ironmaster or powerblocks.

How does one build muscle while maintaining a low bodyfat percentage?

I simply don’t understand how individuals accomplish this outside of awesome genetics. I got my bodyfat down to 9% this past summer but I sacrificed muscle mass in the process. How can I build muscle while retaining a low bodyfat percentage?

It’s your diet…
Eat 5 to 6 small meals a day to keep your metabolism going. Make sure they are high in protein and low in fat. Good carbs are ok.

Try confusing your muscles by mixing up your exercises each time you work a muscle group. i use the CORE program and it works great. I also have a trainer that is trained in CORE workouts.

The key is high protein. You should have a high protein meal no less than 30 minutes after you workout.

What weight should i lift to build muscle and how much should i do it?

I’m 14.I now have a weight set up to 40 pounds. I want to build some muscle what weight would be the best for building muscle and how many reps should i do?

It actually depends on how long you have been working out and what you can comfortably work with.
When I was in the military the rule of thumb was this:

heavy weight+low reps=bulk

light weight+ high reps=cut/definition

For example:

Method One
HIGH/HEAVY WEIGHT WITH LOW REPS=BULK

If you decide to work out with a weight which may feel a little heavy your repetition and sets will be low. i.e. arm curls, 15lbs. of weight. you may only be able to do 5 curls at a time. Those 5 curls will be considered "a set" so you will have lifted a total of 75lbs in one set. But, each curl is considered a "rep"(repetition). Hence, 3 sets of 5 would be a total of 15 reps, and total weight would be calculated as:

15lbs.x5reps x 3sets for a total of 225lbs. OR 15lbs. x 5reps=75lbs.x3 sets=225lbs
This method will give you bulk and beef.

Method Two:
LIGHT WEIGHT WITH HIGH REPETITIONS

If 5lbs. is light to you, then you may be able to do 15 curls at a time. Then your "One Set" would consist of 15 reps(repetitions), and if you can do three sets of these it would be calculated as :

5lbs. x 15reps=75lbs x 3sets=225lbs. or 5lbs. x 15reps x 3sets=225lbs.

This method will give you cut and definition.

So, it isn’t so much in how "MUCH" weight you work with, but, "HOW" you work with it!
If you had an identical twin, who ate the same as you and worked out with the same amount of pounds as you, but he chose "Method One" and you chose "Method Two"; Than the both of you would have two different types of body styles.

The method you choose depends on what you want to do or be in life. If you want to maintain your speed and flexibility, you may not want to bulk up. However, if you want the body that will slow others in being quick to mess with you than you would want to sacrifice speed for security.

In any case, stay dedicated and natural to yourself. Stay away from steroids they will shorten the length of the manhood in your pants, as well, cause irreversible damage to your health. (I am not kidding!)

How come some people just dont seem to build muscle when weight lifting?

I see many skinny guys who weight lift in foot ball for 1 year, and they say they cant build muscle

In regard to lifting weights: To gain muscle mass, one must do a high amount of weight with a low amount of repetitions. This helps in building muscle, while doing a high amount of repetitions with low weight tones the body and makes you “cut.” For example; instead of doing 12 reps of 50 pounds, try doing 4-6 reps of 80 or 90 pounds. Start the set with 60% of your max, and by the end of the set (do around 2-4 sets, 3 is a good amount), you should be doing 80-90% of your maximum.

Also, a person needs to eat a lot. Seems simple, right? It’s not as easy as it looks. Many skinny people have quick metabolisms. To counter this, one must eat more than what he regularly consumes to change his metabolism. If you take 1500 calories a day, try taking 1800 or more. Make sure you are eating healthy too; simply eating fatty foods just to gain weight will do you no good. Consume a lot of protein such as meat, eggs and beans (supplements such as whey protein can help out in this; however be wary of creatine and other stronger supplements as they might be harmful to you) but be sure to get a good mix of fruits, vegetables and dairy too.

Trying to lose fat while gaining muscle is not as easy as it seems because the two processes require different caloric intakes.

To gain muscle, you have to eat more than you burn, and to lose fat you have to burn more than you eat.

Nevertheless, if you are just starting out to do exercise after losing a ton of weight, you might be able to achieve both aims at the same time.

If you want to stay at that weight of 155-165 pounds, try to eat around 2,000 calories per day. If you find that you are gaining more fat than muscle, then reduce calories, but if you are not gaining muscle while keeping your fat levels constant, then you have to increase caloric intake.

Remember to eat a lot of protein if you want to build muscle. Aim to eat around 1g/lb of bodyweight which for you will be 155 grams of protein. If this is too much for you, don´t worry, but at least try to get as close to this figure as possible. Use protein powders because they are concentrated sources of protein, rather than stuffing yourself with cans and cans of tuna!

As for exercise, do resistance exercises (weighlifting, calisthenics) which will help you to build muscle combined with cardio (running, sprinting, swimming) to keep your fat levels in check.

By any means, do not push yourself too hard or you will break your body into pieces! Trust me on this one.

Also, you should consume EFAs (essential fatty acids) like omega 3,6,9 fats because they are essential (duh!), and they are very good for you.

Remember to tweak and adjust as you go along. You won´t get it right the first time, but with time you will find out how to lose fat while gaining muscle at your current weight.
